  1. In order to be accepted into most medical schools, you must earn an undergraduate degree with the proper prerequisites for medical school.  This usually takes 4 years.  Medical school will be another 4 years, provided you are achieving a standard M.D. or D.O. degree.  Mixed degrees such as Ph.D./M.D. will take much longer. (approx. 7 years) Once you are out of medical and you are still wanting to become a surgeon you must participate in a residency program that specializes in the surgery of your choice.  This will usually last between 4 - 7 years.  SO...you are looking at about 12-15 years before you become a practicing surgeon.  Study hard...  :-)

  2. Your question is completely fine compared to what/how other people usually ask. I will give You a detailed explanation as following on how to become a doctor:

    1) Pre-med of 4 years. IE. Life Sciences

    2) Choosing between the two types of medical schools:

         - Allopathic      ( Doctorate of Medicine )

4 years without any residency training program.

         - Osteopathic  ( Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine )

4 years without any residency training program.

    3) Residency ( also known as " Postgraduate Year " ): practising medicine under the supervision of fully licensed physicians, usually in a hospital or clinic. It is a 2 years program in Canada and 1 year in the USA.

    4) Fellowship: pursuing a sub-speciality and the numbers of years needed to complete such programs varies between 2-5 years. Some sub-specialities are:

    - Cardiology

    - Critical Care Medicine

    - Endocrinology

    - Gastroenterology

    - Geriatrics

    - Hematology

    - Immunology

    - Infectious disease

    - Oncology

    - Palliative Care

    - Pulmonology

    - Rheumatology

Now for You to become a Cardiothoracic Surgeon which is a 3 years program, You should have doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine and fellowship residency.

I hope I was clear enough to help You understand.

Wish You All The Best !
