Question:

How much should I ask for as an hourly wage for a retail job in San Francisco?

I know that San Francisco stores tend to pay higher wages that of other U.S. cities, or of outlying towns, but I can't find any ads that specify a wage .. they just say 'TBD' or 'commensurate with experience.' I have retail experience, though I haven't made a career of it.

I don't want to lowball my request and end up working for less than I could have, but I don't want the HR guy to roll around on the floor laughing, either.

  1. the minimum wage in san francisco as of this year is: $9.36/hr. if you have retail experience, i would add a few more dollars to that, say $12-14/hr. retail jobs vary from high end to low end, so that would make a difference as well in terms of how much to ask for. so, if you're going for retail at a high end store, i would definitely ask for more, like $15 and up.
