Question:

How much should I ask for one-on-one tutoring

I'm planning on tutoring this girl for spanish (beginner spanish) and her mother asked me how much I'd take. Now I've only had high school (five years-including one year of middle school) and four semesters of college spanish, which is decent but not good enough for a high pay rate for a tutor. So I was thinkin $7.00 per hour but not sure if this is too much or too little. So any help/advice is appreciated.

  1. That is way too low.  You should ask for at least $15 an hour.  I tutor a 2nd grader for $10 an hour, and my boyfriend reprimanded me, saying that I asked for too little.  It seems like you have a lot of Spanish background.  Regardless, $7 is way too low for one-on-one instruction.  Ask for $15 an hour.

P.S. "Really awesome tutors with lots of credentials, etc" ask for as much as $20- $25 an hour.  So $15 for you is not too much.

  2. I go with Jane on this one, highly credentialed tutors in this area ask for about $20-$25 an hour!  You sound like you have a reasonable background, I would ask for at least $10, 4 semesters of college spanish, if you made A's, go wth $15. Good luck, this is a great way to help someone else and make a little money too. I've loved it since being a stay home mom.

  3. i think u can ask for more! i think at least 10-15$ based by ur experiences!

  4. For one-on-one tutoring, hourly pay usually consists of $15.00-$20.00. A teacher at my school informed us that you should ask for at least $10.00 per hour. In fact, most of the tutors [who request this much] are in high school and still attend classes, such as PreCalculus and even Spanish 4 (one year in middle school + three years in high school). Once again, I think $15.00-$20.00 would be reasonable. With classes from middle school, high school, and college in your pocket, you definitely have more experience than a HS student with a "high pay rate" of $10.00.

    Hope this helps out :)
