I work at a the front desk of a gym and have for 6 months. We are a pilates certification center and students come from all over to take courses so that they can be certified to teach.I am responsible for checking in clients, washing towels, basically holding down the front desk and keeping minor things in order. I answer the phones and explain memberships. Basic front-desk stuff.
The girl who is in charge of making deposits, processing memberships, billing, and basically is the go-to girl if the front desk has a question is leaving. She put in 3 weeks notice 1 week ago. So...
They want me to step us and take on her responsibilities. A promotion to management, basically, and a full time position. I'll get all the perks. They'll pay 50% of my health insurance, I'll get paid holidays, and I can earn vacation time too.
On top of the things that she had been responsible for, they want me to pick up on some certification/organizing too. They want me to be able to answer a call from a student and explain any and all information they may be seeking. That's quite a bit of information to learn, and to learn well enough to be able to assert this information to clients. Nonetheless, its something I am willing to take on.
They also want me to work somewhat extended hours. Instead of the standard 9-5, it would be more of an 8-6 job. This is because mixed info is given to new clients about memberships and pricing allowances, and they want me to be the one who gives every tour, and signs every membership. This way no customers can say that someone at the desk told them they can have a membership with certain benefits for a certain price and that information not be accurate. I will have been the one to explain it to them so that there can be no confusion.
So..going from the easy-going front desk atmosphere part time to the full time office position seems like a lot. I mean, it is a lot to learn and a lot more that I will be accountable for. This leads me to wonder..
How much should they be paying me?
(Note: I am a highschool grad. I graduated last year in '07 and have not been to college for this type of work. They just decided to promote within because they saw I was on top of things and constantly wanting to learn how to do more for the gym. Rather than introducing someone new to the system we use, they chose me for the job because I am already familiar with it and it will be a more simple transition for me to learn than it would be to hire off the street (and although they would have the qualifications) they would have to learn what took me nearly 4 months to perfect being at the desk. The girl leaving held the gym together, so 4 months is much too long to wait to have her position covered. I can almost immediately do the job once she is gone. She has been training me in deposits and membership processing. I'll be ready to handle these tasks on my own by the time she has left. But just to point it out, I didn't have any schooling in the area. I'm just good with computers, and more importantly, people. ;) So basically I know I won't be making as much as I would had I been in school for this prior to my promotion.
Still though, it's going to be a lot of work.
Any thoughts on how much I should be making?
