Question:

How much should I charge for illustrations?

I don't know what they will be for yet, all I know is I am not a "trained professional" per se, and I have never charged before...whilst I want to be honest and say that, I don't want to do myself out of money because people might s***w me over. What is a reasonable asking rate for artwork?

If it helps, some of my artwork is on http://hairwire.deviantart,com

  1. I'm an artist myself, and while I don't have your level of skill (I did check your gallery, it was awesome btw ;), I do know a lot of other artists. Most of the ones I know that do similar quality work can easily charge between $100 and $300 per commission, NOT including S&H.

I would suggest picking a central price range, say around $150, and then raise or lower your price based on time and effort required. If it's a simple picture, go a bit lower, but if it's very intricately detailed, raise it.

You could also try setting a price scale. A certain price for one 'character' or subject, and then an additional charge for each additional subject, for a simple background, and for a highly detailed background.

    Hope this helps.

  2. I had a college professor tell me anything original, at the size of 8x10, should start at $300..... Starting out I use to charge 150-200... but as time went by i bumped it up.... you're absolutely right.. u don't want to cheat yourself... if it's digital you might want to charge more if they will have all rights to use it for whatever they want.. once they have it, you will not benefit from what they do with it.

  3. Hi!

You can charge by the piece for a fix amount (100$ to 500$) or go for a fee of 15 to 20$ an hour.

Don't hesitate to charge a little more and then go a little lower until you have a buyer.

    Good luck!
