Question:

How much should I charge for labor for sewing custom curtains?

I am in no way a "proffesional", but I do a good job. I am sewing two very large (75"X102") lined curtain panels with a grommet top for my neighbor. I am uncertain of what to charge her for labor. Any suggestions?

  1. Estimate how much time it will take you and charge her $12 - $15 an hour.  If you are close friends, reduce the price accordingly.

  2. Call one of the stores that do  that type of work and ask them how much they would charge you to make some curtains for yourself.  Then tell them you will call back when you have made up your mind what your going to do.  That should give you some idea of the charge.

  3. Another common rule-of-thumb is to multiply the cost of the materials by 3 (and you would buy the materials). If you decide to charge an hourly rate, be clear that that's in addition to the cost of materials. Discuss an overall estimate with her before you start to avoid hard feelings later. It's amazing how people will say they LOVE 'handmade' but pitch hissies at 'handmade' PRICES. Make sure you're both on the same page before you start anything.

    Good luck.
