Question:

How much should I charge per hour to tutor students in math?

I am a certified math teacher in Texas. I want to offer after school in home tutoring to students (K-12) that are struggling with math. I've been researching and seen people that charge anywhere from $20-80/hour, so I am not sure what to charge. I would like to be reasonable, but don't want to be underpaid either.

  1. It depends on what is the norm where you are.  I charge $60 an hour, considered very reasonable in the affuent community where I am.  Also the fact that I have 38 years of experience and a solid reputation helps.  Some people do misuse the "whatever the market will bear" philosophy. Also the level and expectations of the tutoring should be brought into play...is it a 7th grader who needs homework help or a senior in high school wanting better scores on an AP Calculus exam?

  2. The secret to getting more customers is 1) being as specific and categorized in your price as possible, 2) implying that things are up to bargain, and the most important, 3) **Charge Less Than Thy Competition**. So I would suggest on the lower end of that scale, or even below it, if you think you can take that risk - anywhere from 15-30 dollars an hour. Also, it would be good to change the price based on the students' grade level.

  3. Since it is tough to find math teachers these days, I would bump up your price a little bit.  You don't want it to be too much or people will think it's a waste of money.

    I would go with $30/hour.

  4. If I were you, I'd start out on the lower end of that spectrum and charge $25-$30 per hour for your services. Once you've built up a clientèle and reputation as a tutor, you'll be able to charge more.

  5. I would go with no less than $25.

  6. 80$ is too much! i think 20-50$ is quite nice n fair!

  7. I tutor a couple students in reading.  Their parents bring their child to me and I charge $30 an hour.  If you have to drive to the clients house or even met them I would consider gas/mileage.....
