Question:

How much should I charge to clean a house?

Some of my good friends just moved, they want to clean their house they just moved from. They said they were going to hire someone to come clean it. It needs floors bleached, waxed, walls washed, overall vacuum, mop, hands and knees scrubbing etc...I said why bother hiring someone when I'll do it for you. As a friend I would love to help but I could really use some money too. She said she would pay me but I just needed to give her a guesstimate...

The house has 2 bedrooms on the main floor, a large master suite upstairs, along with with a full basement. Every square inch needs to be cleaned, along with some yard work outside. Nothing huge but lots of junk around to throw away and a good mow and trim. Also a one car garage to be swept and organized with the misc leftover things they left behind from the move.

I don't want to over charge her but she was going to pay for a service anyway. What's a good estimate per hour?

  1. Since you are her friend, you want to do a good job but not charge her as much, correct? If you want to do it hourly instead of per job, I say $7-$10 an hour is about what she would pay a cleaning person. Go take a look at the house if you haven't already. See exactly how bad it is. It could take you a 40 hour work week to clean it for all you know. I know it takes me a while to clean my house! Be sure you know what you're getting into and that you have the time to clean an entire house, garden, and garage. That's a lot of work. She'll probably be paying you at least $100-$200 for all of your hours.

  2. If you charge $ 15.00 per hour, that would be a very fair price.

Most people get $ 20.00 and more for such work.

I hope you will be appreciated.

Or charge a certain amount for each room and the outside work.

  3. I would ask her what she was planning to "spend" for someone else to do the cleaning.. Are you using your own cleaning supplies or are they providing them for you?  I would charge no LESS than $15 per hour!  Also, figure in gas, food, amount of work...

    Good luck

  4. I charge $15 an hour for normal cleaning, but move out cleaning is way more intensive and harder. I'd probably charge $20 an hour, and this is probably going to take you at least 15 hours to clean. Believe me, you'll earn every penny. Good luck!
