How much should I feed one sheep on a dry lot?

Question

I would feed grain and hay. I may not be able to keep it on pasture all the time.

It is a neutered male I would be keeping for a pet.

Nutrition plays a major role in the overall productivity, health, and well-being of the sheep flock. Ewe body weight does not remain constant throughout the year, but changes with stage of production. Starting two weeks before breeding and continuing two weeks into the breeding period, ewes should be placed on high-quality pasture or supplemented daily with .75 to 1 pound whole shelled corn or barley. The developing fetus acquires approximately two-thirds of its weight during the last six weeks of pregnancy.

You shouldn't need to give a whether grain to maintain weight.  Just make sure there is grass hay available for nibbling.  If he's getting pudgy, cut back, if he's looking thin, increase the amount.  The amount a sheep needs to maintain weight will vary by the individual activity level, size, breed, etc.

A pet wether doesn't need grain.  I'd just keep some nice grass hay in front of him all the time so he has something to nibble on and keep busy.  I'd also think of getting another animal to keep him company.  Herd type animals such as sheep experience a lot of stress when living alone even if it doesn't look like it to us.
