Question:

How much should I get paid for this nanny job?

I am getting paid 13 an hour to watch 3 boys. Ages 4 1/2, 2, and 11 months. I watch them 60 hours a week from 7-7ish or 8. When I walk in the door in the morning there are dishes with food on them left over from the night before, I have to do laundry, fold it and put it away, make their beds, and clean there toy room (which took me 3 hours to organize last week and is a huge mess the next morning). It is A LOT to deal with, especially since the kids have no discipline or boundaries when the parents are home. I live in Pittsburgh by the way. Thanks for your help!

  1. These people are paying you almost $40,000 a year....THAT IS A LOT OF MONEY....Try asking fo more....and you will get fired...and Good luck getting another job that pays this much without an education and experience...

Sorry to tell you but $13 for 60 hours....is $780 WEEK....WITHOUT TAXES.....IF YOU GET AN AN OFFICE JOB YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY TAXES AND FOR THAT MY DEAR, YOU WILL HAVE TO BE GETTING PAID AT LEAST $60, 000 AT LEAST TO END UP WITH $40, 000 CLEAN IN YOUR POCKETS....

THINK ABOUT IT!  AND DONT GET GREEDY....YOU MIGHT JUST END UP WITHOUT A JOB!

    RESPONSE :

THEN YOU CAN GET A JOB ANYWHERE ELSE AND MAKE MUCH MORE MONEY! AND YES, I DID READ YOUR WHOLE BLOG MIZ SMARTY PANTS.

    GOOD FOR YOU.

KEEP ON STUDYING...SO THAT LIKE THAT, SOME DAY YOU CAN TOO AFFORD A GOOD HOUSEKEPER/BABYSITTER THAT CAN CLEAN UP AFTER YOU AND YOUR KIDS!

Oh, and wait till you graduate with you "masters degree" and you see how hard it REALLY is to get a real job that quite pays that. Without having to (pretty much) do what you are doing now, which is working your butt off. The world is hard my dear.

  2. If you don't already have a work agreement/contract, and you would like to stay in this job, I would suggest googling "nanny contract", and setting up a meeting with the parents to go over issues a contract covers, such as:

Pay, benefits, paid time off, duties, and other issues

You cannot be paid as in independemt contractor if you are a nanny. You MUST be treated as their employee. They can pay a firm to handle all the paperwork. Google "nanny tax" for more info and some company names.

I would suggest that you also discuss whether they wish you to focus on their children or their cleaning needs. If you are willing to keep working as a housekeeper/nanny, you should be paid more. If you choose to not clean, I think your pay rate is slightly low, but reasonable.

    Good luck!

  3. Since you're essentially doing two jobs- childcare and maid service- then you need to be getting paid for the work.  At least $20 an hour for that job, if not more.  You're getting cheated.

  4. I think you should be maybe getting paid a little more. Especially if you are helping around the house... I nannyed in Minneapolis for three school-age kids and did very LIGHT housekeeping for $15-16 and hour.

  5. They must be paying your social security and benefits. You are working in their home.

As long as you draw up an agreement of your responsibilities and the both of you sign it, you are being paid what you are worth.

you are illegally employed or falsifying your tax return. You cannot work at someon;s residence without them paying your benefits. You are their employee. If you are cheating the system, you are cheating yourself.

  6. Well you are making more than I make at my job plus I have to go home and care for my kids afterward. How ever if the kids are out of control I would highly think of talking to the parents about setting rules, or you can set your own rules for when you are there. For example if the kids mess up something that you cleaned, then they have to clean or they don't get to play. I have watched some of those Nanny 911 and You can learn a little something from them. ( My kids are not like those though they can be a hand full here and there but for the most part they know better)

How ever if this job is stressing you out , you should consider a different profession. Good Luck.

  7. You should join a yahoo group there are many out there. they are support groups for nannies. i run one. Also you should join professional nanny association and get some great advise from some great professional nannies. I dont think your pay is too bad. I thin the average is 12-15 an hour. But, they should give you gas money for the errands. They should not leave you dishes from the night before either. You should talk to them about that stuff. Tell them how you feel. I have been a nanny for 17 years. I have been with my current family for almost 15 of those. One of the most important things about being a nanny is to make sure you and the bosses have OPEN communication. I would try to sit down and talk to them. Also if you join a group then you will get the advise from lots of nannies right away.

  8. That is a good amount to be paid in my opinion, and TOTALLY understand how hard it is when the parents don't make rules when they're home.

The 4 1/2 year old should be cleaning up after himself. He should be helping you clean the toy room. The 2 year old can help too.

If you're close with the parents, you could ask if it would be a big deal for them to rinse the dishes before they leave them in the sink (tell them it takes longer to clean and you spend less time with the kids). You could also try talking to them about discipline. Ask them what their methods of discipline are and what they expect from the kids. Let them know that if you make a rule, you expect them to follow through with it after you leave or else the kids will get a mixed message and won't listen to you.

If you don't feel you're getting paid enough, you could tell them that with gas prices getting so high, you're having a hard time making ends meet, and ask them to give you maybe a 50 cent an hour raise. Hopefully they'll be generous and give you more.

I've been a nanny for 3 1/2 years, if you have any other questions, feel free to email me! Good luck!
