  1. Don't go.

  2. India is a very vast country and with diverse geographical conditions. There are lots of places which attracts tourists and all those places are spread all over India. Travelling distances are far and away and requires lots of time. Add historic backgrounds, many religions and sects etc. Simply putting, please do not expect to cover up India as a destination in one single visit.

What you could do is plan for more visits spread over a couple of years ( a decade is probably good thing ). Try and cover places related to a particular theme or a particular geographical area. Am sure you will feel much satisfied this way. Though am an India, am doing the same and visit a particular area at a time. And I feel a lifetime is insufficient to fully absorb what India is.

If you are intent on Taj Mahal. Do so. Jaipur, Delhi, Agra is a known golden triangle from tourist views. Lots of options for accomodations, meals in this area. You can easily cover the triangle in about 7 to 10 days at a leisurely pace. Do not hop over the places. Stay and imbibe the surroundings.

If you are careful about accomodation selection, the per day expenses should be around US$ 30 to 50 including meals and local travel. Trains are the best travel option. If you are in a group, try hiring coaches or buses or private vehicles. Be careful with your itinerary and decide before you embark on the travel.

You should look for accomodations at various state sponsored travel corporations e.g MTDC in Maharashtra. All state governments in India has set up travel corporations and provide facilities for tourists.

In case you require any specific info about areas you are going to visit, let me know. I will be happy to provide the info.

Welcome to the one and only INDIA.

  3. A budget traveler can manage in USD 15 per day. stay food and roaming. but if you are in a youth hostel, local public tansport etc.

Say around 100 $ are good for a decent hotel room and taxi, food ofcource.

So if you can save more, may be enjoy a better standards.

Each state has tourism development boards in India.

Search :"tourism development corporation" in google and do some reasearch about the destinations near Agra...

  4. depends on how long u want to stay and whether u want to rough it out.  other than tickets, it would cost you around 100$ a day (incl hotel) if u want a cheap holiday (better than backpacking).  the more u spend on hotesl and food, the more u need to save.  backpacking could get you by at rs 2000 ($50) a day.  intercity travel by train is cheap, but flying is expensive
