Question:

How much should I spend on golf clubs...should I get fitted?

I've recently taken up golf but am not real serious. I took a month of group lessons, which I enjoyed and will likely hit the links at least 8-10 times a year but not much more (so not a lot); but I do go to the range quite often.

I've been playing with these used hybrid clubs which I don't like much. After taking lessons, my golf instructor was recommending RedBird golf clubs in Seattle which does a good job custom fitting. But the price is around $550 for the set of irons. Not sure if this is a good investment or not. I figured I’d be using them for the next 10 years or so. Plus I fall on the short side—about 5’7” on a good day—so thought custom fit clubs might be a good option rather than some nice used ones off of craigslist.com or something. What do you golfing people think? Over $500 too much for a not-so-serious player?

However, they'll cost around $530

  1. Any set of irons are going to cost you atleast that much so that's not a bad price at all. I paid $1200 for just my irons.  It definetly will benefit you to get custom fitted and I highly recommend it.  Go to the shop you mentioned and get a custom fitted set of irons.  Don't get golf clubs off the internet.  You will be very disappointed.  Having custom fitted clubs will greatly improve your game compared to just buying a set that isn't.  It's a great investment and for that price is well worth it.  Hope you have some luck.

  2. If you are just begining you shouldn't be to picky on what you get. Just get what you can easily hold and if you have any trouble you should ask a store clerk to recomend what is a reasonable price.

  3. Try around 600 max unless your serious about the game then try 800-900$

  4. dont listen to these people you dont need to go out and buy expensive clubs, i payed like 300 dollars for mine a year ago and i play pretty seriously and i do good with them and they are not fitted either but its all on how much you want to spend, so im just saying you dont need to buy the most expensive clubs

  5. You do not need custom fitting or expensive clubs.  That only comes into play when you have a lower handicap where it will make a difference.  For now, buy a decent set of clubs and practice on your swing and game.

I would look for an older model of clubs.  Golf stores mark these way down to reduce inventory as newer models come out.  Use the link below to look at the different markdowns that golf stores are running.

  6. $530 is fine.

You have to think yourself is it worth it

If you played 8 times a year for 10years thats still 80 rounds. Then say another 20times a year on the range.

    Thats like 100 rounds worth.

Getting custom fitted clubs will help you. You should pay that money because if you see some good results the game might grow on you and you will be wanting to play more and more.

This happened to me with golf.

Get the custom fitted clubs and keep them in good condition, you will benefit more even if you won't be playing everyweek, but I think the game will grow on you and you just might end up playing 40-50rounds a year.

Since the game has grown on me I must be averaging 100+rounds a year with practice ontop of that.
