My 4 month old daughter sleeps alot during the day. She'll eat, play for approx 45 minutes and then sleep till her next feed (about 3 hrs). Is this normal? She doesn't seem to be awake much to explore the world, play on the floor etc. Please help.

  1. My daughter is 4 months and she naps a lot during the day. Its more like "cat naps". She will sleep for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or sometimes 1 or 2 hours at a time. It all depends of how our day goes...if we are in the car for an hour, she'll sleep for an hour, if I take her in her stroller for 30 min, she will sleep for 30 min. If I am playing with her, bathing her, changing her diaper she will stay awake the entire time. Along with her "cat naps" she also sleeps 10 hours solid at night time which is very lucky for me. Your daughter seems very normal. Sometimes they will go through a growth spurt and it will seem like that's all shes doing for about a week straight.

  2. every baby is different. Mine on the other hand was awake most of the day but slept from 7-7 from 8 weeks you may find some other useful answers at www.bumpsandbeyond.friendhood.net

  3. She's FINE.  Don't EXPLORE her

    Wait until six months/

  4. Our son is almost 4 month old (a week left).  He will sleep 10 hrs (with two feedings) during the night.

During the day, he will sleep 3-5 hrs in 2-3 naps. During the rest of the time, he is either feeding, playing, making sounds, etc.  some babies sleep more, some less.  The average for a 4 month old is 15 hrs a day.

How is your daughter doing in terms of milestones?  If she is doing fine with those (e.g .head control is good, can do mini pushups, grabbing objects, making sounds, smile/laughing, etc.) then no worries.

    Good luck.

  5. thats pretty normal for a 4 month old.....

  6. The average 4-month-old sleeps about 9 to 12 hours (hopefully at night) plus two naps (2 to 3 hours each).  If she's developing normally otherwise, I wouldn't worry too much.  Some infants also go through periods where they need more sleep (often just before a growth spurt).  If she's happy, healthy, and active when she's awake, she may just be one of those people that needs a little more rest than average.  :-)

If she's sleeping well at night, you might try waking her a little earlier from naps, or try keeping her interest longer during play (it helps if you get down there with her and play, too) before setting her down for her next nap.

Of course, if she's waking often during the night, then you'll need to work on getting her body clock on the right schedule.  If she seems to be having any developmental delays, or you just want to be sure it's not a health issue, I'd say to ask her pediatrician about it.

  7. Yes mam that is normal.

Babies tend to sleep most of the day away up until they get to be a year old.

My son is 5 months old and he sleeps all day long and is awake for a total of 3 to 4 hours a day.

I too wondered about that and his pediatric told me that sleeping helps them grow and all that.

But if you want to make sure that there is nothing wrong and to alleviate your fears, speak to her doctor the next time you have an appointment.

  8. No worries - they know when to sleep... and eat... and p**p.

You're due for a 4-month well-check and that's a great question to ask your pediatrician.  My kids always slept a lot when they were going through a growth spurt.

Enjoy the sleepy months.  Pretty soon you'll be wishing she would take longer naps!  :)

I found this link that talks about milestones...

  9. Oh how I wished my son was sleeping like that at 4 months.  I got lucky enough to have a son who almost never sleeps.  If I am lucky (now 6 months)  he will take a single nap for more then 30 min a day.  Talk about needing to get things done, lol.  Soon enough she will be wide awake to explore everything.  It is fine, and just talk to her doc to calm your nerves.  This is normal for a 4 month old.  :)

  10. as often as needed.  relax and let the baby enjoy its life.  breast babies tend to work harder at suckling and metabolize faster -causing them to sleep a bit more and to wake more hungry.

  11. Babies tend to sleep ALOT. If you want to know a more accurate answer then you can do a search on Yahoo or Google as I am sure that you will get all sorts of answers here and won't get accurate information. My suggestion would be to do a search on the internet but your best bet would be to ask your baby's doctor if you are genuinely concerned about it. They probably won't even charge you for it....the front desk can probably answer the question as they have probably heard this question quite a few times. Good luck, I honestly think this is quite normal though. Babies need more sleep as they are growing. You need less sleep as you get older. This link should help alot....hopefully with any questions now and in the future as well.

  12. At that age, they will sleep a lot. As they get older they wont sleep as much.

  13. They are all different.  Some sleep 18 hours and some sleep only 8.
