Question:

How much should a "friend" charge to paint a room? (ie my friend is helping paint my mom's place)

My housemate is helping my mom with minor contractor type stuff at her house (painting several rooms, laying a linoleum floor, fixing her dishwasher, patching cracks). She thinks he's charging a lot and he thinks she's crazy to think anyone would do so much for so little. He's not a professional (but he is pretty good at what he does) and she doesn't "prepare" the rooms as if he was (so he's moving stuff out of the way). I have been the middle woman and it's hard. I don't know what he should charge. HELP!!!

  1. my dad used to paint(when he was a kid. $ 6 an hour. but that was in the 70"s) so i would charge $10 per hour basic rate.

if its a small place and you know its going to be quick charge more.

if its going to be longer like you said several rooms charge a little less because painting takes long.

  2. it depends if she is good and what she is doing a big room small room or if she is painting a design

    I wouldsay $30.00

  3. $25 an hour. That is below what most contractors would charge.

  4. Your Mom should ask for a bid, covering everything, not an hourly wage.

  5. This depends what he is doing. If he is a good carpenter etc.

it also depend what part of the country you are in and what salaries are like there. For instance this would be higher in NYC than in Arkansas.

I would say painters are getting around 15 an hour and carpenters 25. The market has dropped off and people are looking for work right now. These costs were double 2 summers ago around here.
