I am 13 yrs old and my parents are trying to decide a reasonable amount to give me to spend on clothes per year. I want to see what other people think would be a good amount. My parents don't really realize how expensive clothes are now and I want to show them what some other teens have as thier clothing allowance! Thanks!

  1. Well I think you and your parents should sit down and plan on what and how many new outfits they will buy for the upcoming school year. You're right, clothes are very expensive and you're probably looking at maybe $300 to start off with. And after that, if you want clothes throughout the year, maybe set the limit to one outfit a month, roughly $30.

  2. It doesn't really matter how much other teens are getting for clothes. Your parents can spend as much on you as they wish.  If they are living in this day and age they can see the prices on everything is going up. If you are concerned with not getting enough clothes or money for clothes you can always get a job babysitting or doing lawn work for neighbors. It sounds to me like you are trying to be greedy. Some children don't even get the luxury of having new clothes every year. Be happy with what your parent provide you with.

  3. 5.50

  4. I never received a clothing allowance... my parents bought me the clothes that i needed and a few pieces that i wanted within reason...

  5. Well, clothes don't have to be expensive to look nice. I have a daughter who will be 14 in a couple weeks and she is more than happy shopping at Target, Walmart, and Kohl's. Plus, we always look for sales to get the most bang for our buck! Money is tight for many people these days with the economy being what it is. I'd say no more than $300 for the year, incuding undies and shoes. You can do it for less if you're careful and just buy what you need. We also Freecycle and this year my daughter was blessed with a gently used wardrobe for free!

  6. Are we a little spoiled?  Clothes aren't THAT expensive.  It all depends on what you buy and where you buy it.  I think your parents should give you a clothing allowance based on what it would cost for the basics at Wal-Mart.  If you want to shop Abercrombie & Fitch or if you want the designer labels where all you pay for is the name, you can go out and earn the extra money yourself.

  7. you shouldn't be "payed" anything

do some chores and earn the $.

  9. Well in my household we don't do clothing allowance, we usually buy some staples (jeans, pants, tops, jackets, shoes) at the beginning of the school year when they have the sales tax free weekend.  About $300.00 per child roughly.  We shop at Old Navy, Dillards, Kohl's, Target and Walmart.  The kids get one nice pair, maybe two of shoes (they are younger, so think Stride Right).  The teen gets one or two nice pair of sneakers too.  The rest of the shoes during the year are Target/Walmart on sale.  Throughout the year we will normally get a shirt here, pants here etc.

It's not a bad idea for your parents to set up a clothing allowance for you, that way you can learn to manage the money and find out just how much you are willing to pay for a pair of jeans or brand name item.  My stepson who's 17 says in our school district, people don't really pay attention to brand names like they did a million years ago when I was in school.

  10. If I were your parent, the amount I gave you would depend on how much you do to help out and how well behaved you are. If you don't do anything around the house and are constantly giving attitude, I would reconsider giving you anything at all. You can't just expect to be given money, you should give something back and earn it.

Clothes aren't really that expensive, you sound from the way that you talk like you're spoiled. Maybe the clothes you want are expensive, but clothes you need aren't. Your friends might be wearing designer labels but you can't expect that much money. I would give you enough to get the clothes I think you should be wearing, if you decided you wanted designer then you would have to work somewhere to earn money yourself. You can get clothes from Walmart if you live in the US or places like Primark in the UK. It would also depend on how much money you get to spend in the week if any, on how much you would get for clothes.

I wouldn't give it you as a lump sum per year either, I would give it you monthly so that you didn't spend it all at once. One outfit per month is perfectly acceptable. I would probably give you £40 per month as a basic amount, that works out around £10 a week and £480 per year. I think that is more than enough and it would also depend on how much you helped out and behaviour. People might disagree, but I think that's fine and anything else you can work for. You could also try and make an arrangement with your parents where you do different chores to earn extra, but that's up to them.

Also, does it include underwear and shoes? It depends on what you buy for yourself and what your parents buy for you.
