Question:

How much should a teenage male cat eat?

Our cat, Max, is around a year old. We feed him two small cans of Fancy Feast wet food daily, and he always has dry food available, but he perfers wet food.

The problem is that he's always hungry. I can tell because he meows a lot, bothers me, and runs to his food dish whenever I walk in that direction (i usually feed him).

Sometimes he'll get on the kitchen counter and look for scraps to eat.

Since we're not used to having male cats, I don't know if they're supposed to eat more than our female cat.

I can feel his back bones, but he doesn't look freakishly skinny. I don't want him getting fat either.

So how much should he be fed?

Is two cans enough?

Thanks.

  1. food

  2. two cans are fine. but split them up. like give him half of a can in the morning, a full one in the afternoon, and another half at night.

  3. You should feed him 2 or 3 times a day. If you need to you should mix the dry food with the wet food and mix it in together.

  4. No, not enough!  Fancy Feast is only 3 ounces.  My 8 year old female eats at least 3 of those a day.  OR, she'll east 2 of those and ounce pouch.  OR, one big can 5.5 ounce and another small one (fancy feast or pouch).  Her weight has never gone up, she weighs about 7 pounds.  I would feed your male 2 big cans or three small cans a day.  Some cats may even eat 2 big cans a day depending on their activity level and how many calories they burn off.  My cat is pretty inactive compared to some.  It's easy to keep an eye on the weight, if you feed him too much you'll see his weight bump up a pound or two.  Than you know to back off a little.  Find the happy medium and don't let the poor kitty go hungry.  Two small cans a day is not enough for a young active male cat!

  5. It depends on how much the cat weighs.
