How much should an average female cat weigh?

I have an orange tabby that is a petite little thing. She is pretty light weight compared to this male cat I used to have in the family. My cat before her, a snowtiger lynx point siamese, was also petite. Both my current cat and the one before were really easy for me to pick up and carry around. How much should a female cat weigh that is healthy?

I just took my kitty to the vet today for her annual exam and vaccinations.  She's a grey tabby, 2 years old.  They weighed her and she weighs 12 pounds.  I asked if that was OK and what I was told by the doctor is "she's perfect."  I've read that normal weight for adult cats is anywhere from 8 to 15 pounds, so there's a range of several pounds that's considered normal.

Weight depends on the age and breed of the cat.  Females normally weigh less than a male of the same age and breed.

i have a smaller-than-average fluffy calico kitty that is in really good shape and weighs 8 pounds.

she survived outside for a week on her own (guy that took out of our house  for a week didnt know we had her), avoided predators (coyotes) and managed to get food for herself i guess. so thats probably a good weight. heh

The perfect weight for a cat depends on the breed -- Maine Coons weigh more, Siamese weigh less. If you have an average mutt cat (like mine, a DSH--domestic shorthair), she should weigh between 8 and 14 lbs, in general. Your orange tabby is a girl? That's unusual! Enjoy her and only worry about her petite size if her vet tells you to. Weight varies a lot depending on genetics and activity level. They can weigh anywhere from 6-10 pounds when in the healthy range.  If you can see her hip bones sticking out, or if she starts to look like a furry basketball with a kitty head and tail, that's when you need to worry about her weight.
