Question:

How much should groceries for one be in Cork per month?

My grocery/food allowance from my school is $400 US a month (about 300 Euro I think). Is this going to be enough? I'm used to buying on a budget. I just don't want to dip into my personal money for groceries (I'll be fine if I have to dip into it for eating out and for alcohol).

  1. While watching my wallet living for a year in Cork city, I spent about 20 to 30 euro a week on groceries. And I didn't even have to go Aldi or Lidl. Tescos or Dunnes stores are the best bet.

If you are including alcohol, well, maybe a lot more, but I would have spent maybe 20 euro a week in the off licence (liquor store), and a whole lot more on going out. But if you're just talking about food, €300 is plenty.

However, right now $400 is closer to €270. And getting lower. Sorry.

  2. Look for a Lidl or an Aldi shop, they are very similar and are very and I mean very cheap. Weekly shopping for one person including a bottle of wine will be less than 40euro, I even added money onto that because some people might eat more than me.

Even if you have to get on a bus to get there it will be cheaper than Tesco or Dunnes stores.

  3. You will be fine.

Myself and my boyfriend live on €200 a month groceries!

We do our shopping in Tescos and Lidl.

It depends on your taste in food, brand names etc. If you prefer high branded foods then Marks and Spencers would be ideal yet expensive.

Eating out is expensive in restaurants but I suggest buying most your alcohol from supermarkets or off-licences as pubs are very expensive here.

    Enjoy your Stay!

  4. Yeah, I would say that'll be plenty. Personally, I would be able to survive on around 230 euro per month fairly easily. Have a look at the Tesco website below to get an idea of prices for groceries. I haven't looked at it so you might have to register or something, but it's worth a look anyway to get an average guide. Remember though, stuff is cheaper in Tesco (or Aldi or Lidl, I'm sure there's at least one of those in Cork) than in Spar, for example. So shop carefully!

  5. You will have to cost the price of food, to find out if your budget will cover it. If you have to restrict your money it would be best to cut down on the alcohol and the going out.
