I know this is a little silly but as a 1st time mother i want to make sure everything im doing is ok. My son was born 8lbs 9oz, at his 2wk check up he was 9lbs 8oz. He is breastfed and is eating on demand(i didnt want to set a schedule until he was 3months old) he is now 13lbs 11oz. He is VERY healthy and Dr. says he's Doing great. but will he continue to gain like this? and once he's on a schedule will he loose a little? any answers toward these ?'s are appriciated!

  1. In the first year of life, a baby gains a lot of weight.  A baby is expected to double their birth weight by 4-6 months, and triple their birth weight by 12 months.  After the first year, weight gain slows down a little, but will still remain pretty steady.  By 2-3 years, weight gain will start to be much slower than as a baby, and kids will only gain a few lbs each year as they grow  :)

  2. No my daughter was very chubby when she was born the dr say she was prefect but TALL, untill my daughter start walking at 8 month old, she didnt gain weight for like couble of month, she was a very active baby..  right now my nefphew is 3 month old and he weight 15 pound, but he was not a breastfeed baby , i woudlnt be worry if the dr tell your baby is healthy .

  3. My son is 7 weeks old now, breastfed and weighs nearly 14 lbs too! It sounds like our babies are growing at a similar rate. =)

Everyone tells me what a big baby he is (and he is chubby!), but as long as his doctor says he's healthy - I'm more than happy for him to be big!

It beats having a baby who can't gain weight at the breast! (So be proud!)

Babies usually don't lose weight, but gain more the older they get -- unless they aren't getting enough food or because of illness, etc. And I would continue feeding on demand if at all possible to ensure he gets what he needs.

He *should* stop growing so rapidly after he's 3-6 months old though, and then only grow large amounts during growth spurts.. (they have a growth spurt at around 2-3 months, then again around 6 months, again at 12 months and so on..)

    I hope I helped a bit.. =)

    Good luck <3

  4. If the doctor said he's doing great then he's doing great. My baby was 7 lbs. 3 oz. at birth and was 13 lbs. at 9 weeks. Now, at 4 months, he's 17 lbs.

My point is, don't worry about it. It sounds like your baby is thriving and doing great. I freaked out about my baby being "too big", but he's not. He's where he should be in comparison to his height. And don't be concerned about him losing weight, that's not a worry at this age.
