we have a leak under our house, we had a plumber come out, he said they would have to re route the water line, also he said the hot water heater element is broken, also the the k**b is stuck in the on position. He gave a price of $1500-2000 does that sound right or can it be cheaper??

  1. you have multiple issues, and not quite enough info.

reason for re-routing line? possibly too close to an outside wall in a crawl space, northern climate. a split pipe, or failed connection\valve can be cut out and replaced. freezing pipes can be solved by insulating the pipes and closing foundation vents in winter.

if the water heater(sounds like it might be gas) is older than 6-8 yrs., not worth fixing, should be replaced.

if you are getting significant plumbing re-work, a new water heater, installation, etc. $1500 maybe, depends where you live, but it does sound high. get mult. estimates, and alternative ways to fix.

    Hope that helps.

  2. As Woodwek said, not enough info for us to really guess.

one thing that will determine labor  price is your area.

In my area, (Arizona) replacing a water heater is about $200 flat or $30 an hour.

re-routing a water line is usually $30 an hour.

I get plumbers that work for large companies to come to my house on weekends to do my work on the side and I pay them $20.00 an hour--that is an option sometimes.

Whatever you do, definitely get better explanations from the plumber, get AT LEAST 3 quotes, and make sure that the plumber you pick gives you a FIRM price.  Not a "range"  that could be several hundred dollars either way.

    Good luck!

  3. You should get at least 3 quotes.

  4. sounds high to me do get more estimates from well known companies.
