Question:

How much should the repair on my car cost?

I bought a 91 Acura Integra, that failed smog, well my dads friend who has been a mechanic for 30 years took a look at the car and said it needs a tune up, new brakes (or brake pads), he said the oil was super bad so I guess a oil change, and he's going to wash the engine and get it all clean, oh and the aid conditioning needs to be fixed, he's saying about $300 to do all that just for parts he's not going to charge labor since my dad is helping paint his house.

It seems like a good deal to me, what would it cost if I took the car to a shop?

Oh and I know its illegal to sell a car that doesn't pass smog, so after I get the car fixed I'm taking the guy the bill and I'm making him pay me back the repair cost unless he just wants to take the car back and give me back all my money, plus the costs of repairs.

  1. This does sound like a good deal at $300!  One place you can use to do price checking on car repairs is in Driverside.com.  They are still in beta but they have a ton of data on what car parts and repairs should cost.

  2. how are you going to make him pay?  what you want to do is get paid for your friend's work by having the other guy pay for it.

lol, you are really cheap.  if it was against the law to sell a car without getting a smog pass, why bring it up now tht you have bought the car?

ps-brakes will not cause a smog failure, nor will an oil change or washing the engine not to mention the air conditioner.

what does a tune-up entail nowdays?

maybe changing the plugs and wires, unless an engine code went off?

  3. Not sure what state you live in, So I can't talk law.      But if this tune up passes smog test I'd be satisfied. But you have a good deal on the price. Tell your father that I said you are so happy and you two will do quality poppa-daughter bonding as you both do that painting!

                     "BRILLIANT"!!!!

  4. 300? thats a **** good deal. take it. if you bring it anywhere else its gonna be more expensive than that, especially for brake and air conditioner service

  5. Probably about $1500 at a shop.  It's a great deal.

A "tune up" doesn't really mean much, so I wouldn't bet any big money that it'll pass smog after that.

  6. About 1200 dollars for all that where i work
