Question:

How much should we spend on a cousin's wedding gift when we are flying there?

We are paying about $1500 to go to the wedding, which we are happy to do because nobody else in the family can afford to go. However, it's a strain on us, too, so is it acceptable to choose an inexpensive gift? How much sounds OK?

  1. oh absolutely! i know that if my cousin had to pay that much for her airfare i would make sure to tell her NOT to bring me a gift! she is lucky enough to have u a her wedding, but if u really want to give her something then get them something simple, maybe a bath set, or a silverware set. trust me ur doing more thatn enough on ur part.

  2. That's a lot and I think you can do something less expensive.  In a case like this, I would opt for any actual physical gift and not cash.  You can buy them a few cute, yet inexpensive things for their home.  Dress up the gift, package and wrap it nicely.  In other words, make a $30 gift look like it was $60 or even $70.    Look for things on sale at a nice store (like Macy's), but try using coupons and discounts to make it less expensive.  Macy's has a lovely home collection.

  3. I am English and haven't got a clue about American money so I'm hoping you sort of understand English money.

I would probably pay for a gift that costs between £35 - £50.

Its the thought that counts isn't it.  You dont need to spend a huge amount on a gift as you are spending a lot of money to get there and I'm sure they will just be grateful for that.

    Have fun =)

  4. Between $40 - $60. I believe is fair.

  5. Well, after reading what other's said... apparently my opinion is in poor taste. But to be honest, if I were your cousin, I would beg you NOT to buy a gift! You're not only spending the money to go out there, but you're also taking time off work, etc... I really don't think it's necessary to buy them a gift, especially if they are having such a lavish wedding and expecting you to have to pay so much to even share the day with them! Go with something cheaper ($50 gift is totally fine).I think it would be totally rude if they "judged" you based on how much you spent on a gift that in all honesty is OPTIONAL... that's why they're called gifts!

  6. if your cousin has a registry than pick something you can afford because remember you need spending money for whereever you are going especially if you never been there before...if he/she doesn't have a registry just make a cash contribution I say 200-400$ is good

  7. I agree with YouWish- in this situation I would buy a gift rather than give money or a gift card. Since you spent so much on the flight I would buy something simple for around $30, but something that also looks nice. Maybe something like a glass salad bowl with salad servers. Or a set of bamboo placements, which can be quite inexpensive but look really nice.

  8. Give what you can afford. If attending put a strain on your pcoket, it is more than okay to pick a more inexpensive gift.

  9. It absolutely is acceptable to choose an inexpensive gift.  How much?  If they have a gift registry, pick the least expensive thing on there, or that which you can afford.  If there is no registry, $25-$50 is quite reasonable.

  10. go to their reg. store and pick something in the middle range of the items they have, say they have 10 30 dollar things and 5 100 dollar things and 3 50 dollar things go with the 50

  11. You give a gift according to what you can afford and how much you feel for the person and or occassion.  What you paid to get to the wedding be it a dollar bus fare or $4000 first class plane tickets, has nothing to do with the price of the gift.  Two seperate issues.  Give what you can afford.  If you could not afford to go you should stay home but your travel expenses is not the concern of the bride and groom.

  12. NOPE SORRY.BEEN THROUGH THIS ALREADY AND ILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO HELP YOU.

MY SISTER IN LAW HAD HER WEDDING ON THE BEACHES IN SPAIN.WHO COULD AFFORD A PLANE TICKET TO THERE RIGHT? EXACTLY SO ME AND MY FIANCE DECIEDED TO GO BECAUSE SHE MEANS A LOT TO US.

WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT,IT DOESNT MATTER HOW MUCH YOUR PLANE TICKET WAS YOU STILL HAVE TO BUY AN EXPENSIVE GIFT.

BUYING A PLANE TICKET HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR COUSIN ETC. I MEAN YES YOUR PAYING TO SEE HER,BUT THE GIFT PART IS SO CLICHE.

I WOULD PURCHASE THEM CONCERT TICKETS.DONE IT ONCE AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN NOW.ITS THE BEST CHOICE.THEY DONT HAVE TO BE THE BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE,BUT I GUARENTTE AFTER GETTING CHINA PLATTERS AND TIFFANY PLATES THEY'LL ENJOY SOMETHING FUN[=
