Question:

How much should you tip for a half priced meal?

I've heard of such a related frugal vs cheap example. Specifically, it's OK to use a "buy one get one free of lesser value" coupon at a restuarant, but your tip should be based on the the full amount (after you add in any tax), and NOT the amount after you apply the coupon.

If a restaurant has a promo that an entree or whatever is half off, should the tip be based on the original price, the 50% off price, or would you tip the amount somewhere in between the those 2 figures?

  1. I still go by service.   If the service is good, I try to tip extremely well when it is a half price meal...the coupons don't effect the wait staff, but it's more to make me not feel like a cheap skate.

  2. I've worked as waitstaff and in the kitchen at a smalltown cafe

Guess what?  The waitstaff and cook[s] have to do the same amount of work, no matter how much YOU pay for the meal.

    Tip from the FULL price!

If you want to be treated well (esp. if you are a regular!) then treat the staff well.

  3. I tip based on quality of service, not price of the food.

  4. Average tip is 15%.  If they did a really good job, go higher, at least 20%.

Generally, don't tip because of bad service, many times situations occur that are in no fault of the server.  But if you get a rude waiter/waitress, like flat out jerk, tip nothing or tip something insulting like loose change.

  5. i am tired of tipping for bad service  you should tip the full price of the meal but tipping has gone overboard  not with a good waitress but its these bad ones  it seems they dont even want to wait on you  they are impolite  not friendly at all service is poor but they expect a tip  no not from me  i dont care what they think   tip good even in a greasy spoon if the service is good

  6. You should tip based on the full price of the meal.

It still takes the same amount of service to bring it to you, it still takes the same person to cook it, the same to bus the table and the same to wash the dishes.  Most of the time your tip gets divided among all these people.

  7. Tip on pre-discounted price.  It is the right thing to do!

  8. It should be based on the original price. The tip goes to the server and the staff, who give you full service.

  9. the tip should be based on the full price. Your waitress or waiter doesn't work half as hard to serve you that half price entree, right?

  10. What I wan't people to understand about tipping is this- the IRS assumes a server is tipped a certain amount based on 8% of that servers sales over a year. Your server pays income taxes based on the SALES amount- not the actual tip they have earned. I don't feel that a server deserves a tip just because they showed up for work, BUT I hate to see a good person work their tail off and make a lot of effort to do a good job even if they know the person might not tip at all- that is part of the job a good server knows that and treats you well even if you might not tip them. So please tip a good server well, it is not fair to expect servers to pay above and beyond what they make- the IRS has it wrong, and if you tip someone who deserves it, you help them pay the TAXES on that income, that someone else has forced them to pay. I hate the IRS!!!!!

  11. It should be based on the original price.
