Question:

How much soda is too much?

My boyfriend and I have completely opposite tastes when it comes to soda -- I don't drink it at all, because I don't like carbonated drinks. He can drink a 12 pack in two days. And he drinks it every day. He's a soda-maniac. I've told him time and time again that drinking that much soda CANNOT be good for you, even though his metabolism is way too fast for him to ever worry about gaining weight from it (he's 6'2 and 140 lbs!!). But really. I worry about it. How can I talk some sense into him? I don't want to ban soda from his life forever, because that would be weird and controlling, but isn't there any way that I can convince him that soda just really isn't that good? And that it's bad for your teeth? And that it's chockful of sugar and causes diabetes? And that the reason why he gets so many headaches is because he's freakin' addicted to caffeine?

  1. A can of soda or two a day is fine with glasses of water to chase it with. If you don't chase it with water you can knock out your kidneys like that.


  2. I think your personal lifestyle of not drinking it at all is perfect. The caffeine in the soda actually *removes* the calcium from your bones, giving you a higher chance of osteoporosis and other disorders (The exact way this happens is that caffeine causes the acidity of your blood to increase, and when that happens, your body responds by diffusing its calcium out of the bones, and sending precious magnesium out of your muscles as well--which may explain any painful cramps he may get). Every can of soda you drink negates any glass of milk you may have drinken beforehand. It's much better to just remove it altogether.

  3. Get him one of those soda-stream machines, but none of the concentrates.

    Make him beautifully fizzy water without the sugar, sweeteners, caffeine, or colourants, -chill it in the fridge.

    Cheaper, healthier, and tastier than bought sodas!

  4. A 12 pack of what? Cans, bottles what? 6 cans is equal to 9 servings in a day. That is getting to be too much. If it is 6 bottles then it deffinately is. That is deffinately too much.

    He must not eat much at all becuase I simply cannot believe that he can drink that much soda a day and not way at least 100 pounds more than he does. High metabolism or not that simply is a whole lot.

    Now lets start with the cafeine content. Pepsi has 25 mg of caffeine per serving and coke has 35 mg per serving. A recent study showed that health problems starting arrising from those that consumed 300 mg of caffeine a day. Caffeine also takes more water to process than caffeinated drinks provide so it has a dehydrating effect. This can result in headaches, muscle aches, skin and organ problems, lack of energy and not being very clear minded. Excess caffeine also affects kidneys, heart and more.

    All of that sugar can possibly cause diabetes but it seems unlikely if that person is not overweight. Unless a person has diabetes naturally it normally develops from being overweight, but not always.

    As long as he is not gaining weight and does not have problems associated with excess sugar and caffeine then there is not much to be concerned about. But I find it hard to believe that he does not have some sort of problems from long term use of too much caffeine.

  5. One can of soda is too much! Soda is the worst thing possible to drink, and I feel sorry for the people who drink it. One can of coca-cola is about 48 grams of sugar, that's about as much sugar in 10 chips-ahoy cookies. Not only that, but the carbonated water eats calcium which means your bones get weak and brittle, which means you're VERY likely to get some sort of fracture of injury of some sort when you're older. And you're right, it's bad for you're teeth. The acid wears down you're teeth, gives cavities, and wears down enamel which makes your teeth more sensitive to cold liquids. Even though he has a high metabolism, it will slow down by drinking so much pop. It is important and critical to tell him the risks and dangers he's being put in.

  7. soda really has no positive effects, have him drop it and replace it with water, it will be hard at first, but once you kick it, you won't miss it.
