Question:

How much space between trees do I need while planting?

I have 2 pine trees about 5 ft tall about 10 ft apart. I want to plant 1 or 2 maple trees nearby. Now the maple trees are from seed that I have grown so they are still small. I was wondering about the roots and if there's enough room for them all. How much distance do I need to keep from the pines? I like trees and I love the shade so I know they will be crowded but this is the look I want. I want to feel like I'm up north with trees all around me. Is there any rule of thumb when planting trees or is this too much to ask for? Thanks everyone.

  1. I don't know how much space you got in your land, but if you have a big space I suggest  between 2 or 3 meters to give them enough space to breath once they are grown. also it is more agreable for the eyes, doesn't look messy

  2. take a photo from a distance of 100 feet and try to figure how high they will be so you can draw in the size of trees.

to figure the shadow take a stick about 5 feet high and multiply that hight by the length of the shadow at different times of the day as this will give you some idea how much shade it will throw.

IF you plant closely they will grow slower and might be stressed especially if grass is planted around them.  Usually maples are planted 15 feet apart minimum.  they do not grow all that well together, Pines liking acidic soil and Maples alkaline soil.

Try to find a tree that grows better with pine and no so dense a shade might work better

  3. I don't love Pine trees because of the mess they make and the bugs they attract, however I have lots of Maple trees and some are as close as 20ft. apart and have done well. They need sun so try not to plant where they will be shaded by existing trees.
