We will be travelling to France in July (5 days in Limoges for a wedding). We are adding three days in London. Aside from lodging and travel (already paid), how much USD should we plan on bringing for spending on food and incidentals.

  1. Remember that Euro is over 1.3 to the USD.

You can find McDos everywhere and eat for as little as Euro 7 per person per meal. However, most snacks or cheaper restaurants in France will cost you 20-30 Euro per person.

In France, USD notes will be accepted only in banks (not always willingly) and in Bureau de change. Mostly the 100 notes, smaller notes may be changed but draw a bad rate.

Travelers checks are accepted but be prepared to pay a hefty fee.

International credit cards (visa, amex, diners) are accepted as payment in many shops and restaurants and you can draw cash from ATMs in nearly every place.

About the amount needed, the easy answer is: as much as you can afford to spend and then some. France is well known for good - and expensive - food and wine as well as for fashion and perfume. I still remember my credit card going red hot when my wife discovered the Guerlain  shop in Paris or when I entered the Hermes shop and bought a dozen ties (I still shame for that one).

The same comments go for London, except that prices are probably much higher than in France.

While in Limoges, you might be interested in dishware, this city is renowned for beautiful plates.
