  1. As you know Euro is stronger than $ nowadays so consider that you are going to spend more. Don't bring all cash or bring just few notes and put them in different secure places (just in case you will need it or a small shop wouldn't accept credit card).

Use credit card and traveller's cheques but be aware that also in Italy there are identity thefts so never loose the sight of your credit card, they could clone it. Enjoy your trip to Italy!

  2. You can get prepayed visa or master cards that are excepted almost every where but, if you go like cafes or small pizza places that don't except visa well you will need money as far as traveler checks are concern you can take them but you can only go to banks to cash them and thats a real problem and time consuming.

I want to suggest to you something and that is go to supermarkets and buy bread, lunch meat, chesses and even pasteries also.

It realy depends on your budget.

  3. Things are expensive. Lunches will be pizza or sandwiches. Count on 10 Euro a day for this. Since this is a school trip I would advise against the wine which is cheaper than other drinks. Soft drinks are expensive so drink water. It is free at the fountains and 1-2 Euro (cold) from the vendors. Save the empty and refill at the fountains often. There are ATMs everywhere so that is a wise alternative. It is going to be an enjoyable holiday so have a good time watch for pick pockets, eat lots of Gelato and fall in love.

  4. Figure $50 a day will cover you, then bring extra because it won't be enough. Forget the grocery stores, your lunches will be eaten while you're at the "sights".

Find a way to make some extra money before you go and have fun spending it while you're there. ..

Remember, your American dollar is worth "about" 75 cents...........IE: $50 is worth about $37.

           That SHOULD cover you.

  5. Generally figure $2 here would buy you about $1 worth of merchandise there.  If you want a $4 Big Mac, it might be 4 Euros, which would cost you about $8.  (Actually about $6.50)

Tomic 43 is correct - there are a lot of fountains in Rome, and the water is all good to drink.  I made a point of taking a sip whenever I ran across a fountain.

  6. Don't take money alone.  Too risky in case of loss, theft.  I took American Express travelers checks and credit cards (Visa).  Pack some non perishable food (think snacks like beef jerky or trail mix).  As you consume these items along the way you will then have spare room in your luggage for souvenirs.  Save money that way also since you can find farmers markets or stores where you can buy groceries just like the Italians.  Only eat out when you feel like splurging.  Save money you would spend on food on something more worthwhile.  remember your American dollar will be worth much less over there so expect higher prices for everything than here in the USA.  Oh, and you can't take too much money.
