  1. Everything you spend on the ship and tours offered by the ship will be put on your major credit card. The basic amount is very little, like $120 per person for a week. The rest depends on your drinking($6 to $7 for a cocktail), your tours which run from $20 per person on up, and what you buy on the ship. As far as what you spend in port, that's all entirely up to you and your wife. I take very little cash with me for 1 week, maybe $500, that's it. If I see something that I must have for more money, I put it on the credit card. One thing to know is let you bank and credit card company know you are going on a cruise so they won't be alarmed by unusual charges. So the bottom line is I won't bring any more then $1,000 cash at the most. The less you bring, the safer your money is.

  2. The price of your cruise includes your cabin, all meals (except the specialty restaurants), all shows and entertainment, and use of all facilities on ship, except the Spa. The only thing that you will absolutely have to pay for once on the ship is gratuities of $10 a day for you AND your spouse.  There are some other things that you may spend money on but they are all pretty much optional.  The next biggest expense other than gratuities is tours and excursions from the ship.  These can cost between $30 and $130 or more per person, depending upon what the activity is.  BUT, you can order tours before the cruise and on some cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean, pay for them before you leave home.  The next biggest expense will be drinks; both alcoholic and soft drinks.  If you do not order a lot of alcoholic drinks and soft drinks your drink tab will be very low.

Below is a list of all of the things that you will have to pay for are:

Gratuities: They will amount to about $10 per person in your cabin per day. When you check in at the pier they will set up an on-board charge account for you to cover any and everything you may buy on ship. They will issue you a "cruise card" which will also serve as your room key and pass to get on and off the ship. At the end of the cruise they will add the gratuity to your tab and you can pay with a credit card or cash, your choice.

Alcoholic drinks and soft drinks: Coffee, tea, milk, juice, and lemonade and punch will be provided free but you must pay for drinks (alcoholic beverages) and they will add a 15% gratuity to each drink of soft drink order.

Photographs: Cruise lines will take plenty of photographs of you all over the ship, in the dining room, and as you exit the ship in ports. These will cost a lot, like $15 to $20 for most.

Tours/Excursions: These are listed on your cruise line web site and you can reserve them well before the cruise and pay for them also. If you wait until you are on ship to book tours they will be charged to your on board account (then you can pay cash to settle your account on the last day)

Souvenirs: Anything you buy on ship from a gift shop or duty free shop goes on your on board account. Things that you buy on shore you pay cash or credit card for.

Casino: If you plan to gamble on ship you will need cash for that.

Other: most cruise lines have what they call "specialty" restaurants where there is a gratuity/service charge. All other food on board is free and its not really necessary to budget for food; you cannot eat all that will be available.

If you want/need to have your hair done, get a massage or wrap, or any services from the spa, you will have to pay for them. You can use the gym free but the spa stuff cost big bucks.

Ships now have internet cafe and some have WiFi but the there is a fee for internet access and it is very expensive (like about $50 to $60 an hour).

You cabin will likely have a minibar with soft drinks and munchies; you have to pay for them (but there is free room service 24/7).

So on a two week cruise you may not need more than a couple hundred each and that would be for souvenirs and the casino.  If you plan on big purchases in ports you can use a credit card.  At the end of the cruise you pay your tab with a credit card.  If you want you can pay cash and so have to take enough money to do that. And if you pay cash as I said there is one mandatory expense and all of the rest are optional.
