  1. It all depends on where you are living and the kind of life you want to live. Let me tell you that I've been 7 times to Chile and the last time was this June, where I found Santiago to be very expensive. Taxis were abominably expensive and the public transport system was chaotic and prices in general went up from October last year. I love Chile but to me Santiago would not be an option right now. Try the south of Chile, places like Pucon, Puerto Varas, Villarica, Osorno are beautiful and not than expensive.

The peso exchange is around 530 pesos per dollar.

  2. Travel expert is right when she mentions the expense of santiago. There are neighborhoods of the capital less expensive than others. La Dehesa, Vitacura, and Las Condes are three of the most expensive parts as far as lodging, apartments, restaurants, etc. However there are other parts that are middle of the road as far as costs: La Florida (where i live), Ñuñoa, San Joaquín, and Maipú are nice places to consider. I would definately avoid at all costs the least expensive neighborhoods because of security. If you want a list of those, write me. I dont want to publicly announce them here.

Taxis are expensive in the capital, but if you know how to use the metro system, its quite economical. You can purchase something called "BIP" which is a card that you use to access all metro and microbuses. You can charge it with however much money you wish. 10,000 pesos should last you about 1 or 2 months depending on how much you travel (that's a little less than $20 USD.)

other wonderful alternatives are La Serena (6 hours north of santiago). This is a beautiful community with a beach, its also smaller, MUCH smaller. Transportation is less expensive. (but there is no metro).

Valdivia in the far far south or Puerto Montt are nice cities and less expensive. Concepción is a big city if you like that kind of thing, and still not quite as expensive as Santiago.

I would say, if you wanna live like a king here for two months, you'll need about $5000 USD or 5,167,500 pesos roughly. That is including rent of close to $1500 a month for two months, and close to $2000 a month for food and entertainment and transportation.

now then, if you want to live comfortable but less extravagant, you can do so with about $3000 USD or roughly 1,590,000 chilean pesos.

You must consider emergency money though. Its always best to bring more than you think you need because when you are far away from home, things can happen.

Hope you have fun and anymore questions about Chile, write to me.

    Good luck
