  1. How do you get 471 square feet from 16 x 43 (16 x 43 = 688)?

If the pool is a rectangle of 16 feet by 43 feet, and you want to calculate the square footage of concrete 5 feet all the way around, you would add 10 feet to both dimensions, so 26 by 53, multiply those two together (26 x 53 = 1378), and then subtract the square footage of the water (1378 - 688 = 690 square feet of concrete).  To get the volume of concrete, which is usually what you need to know, you would multiply the square footage by the intended depth.  A 4 inch depth is one third of a foot, so in that case, one third of 690 is 230 cubic feet.

  2. First, the average dimensions of your pool... sqrt(471) = 21.7 (roughly 15x30 I guess, plus your coping.)

    Then add a 5 ft perimeter... 31.7

    Total area ... 31.7 x 31.7 = 1005 sq. ft for deck and pool.

    Subtract... 1005 - 471 = 534 sq.ft

If your pool is odd-shaped (kidney, etc.) there's formulas for that.

EDIT .... clearly your pool is much bigger. But you can use the same procedure shown above to estimate the deck square footage.

  3. It depends on the shape of your pool.

If your pool is square (yeah, I know it's not!) it would be about 21' 9" per side. A 5 foot wide deck would be 31' 9' on every side.

A 31' 9" square has an area of about 1008 square feet. If you subtract the area of the pool (471 Square feet) inside this square, you have about 1008 - 471 = 537 square foot deck.

NOW if the pool was rectangular, say 10 feet on the short sides it'd be 47.1 feet on the long sides. Then you'd have a deck 20 feet by 57.1 feet (of course, with a pool in the middle).

20 x 57.1 = 1142 square feet. Minus the area of the pool:

    1142 - 471 = 671  square foot deck.

Now, if the pool was round, you'd have a round deck with a radius of 17.25 feet (5 feet more than the pool), or 17.25 squared x pi which is about 935 square feet. Take out the area of the pool, 471 square feet and you have an "O" deck of 464 square feet.

OOOPS!  I just saw that you posted the dimensions of the pool!  OK!

    A 16 x 43 pool has an area of 688 square feet, not 471.

If you put a 5 foot wide deck all around it the deck would be (26 x 53) - 688. That is 1378 - 688 = 690 square foot deck.

    That was fun.
