Question:

How much state funding do Toulon's buses get?

I am working on a research project comparing the bus system in my home town of Columbia, SC to the similar-sized city of Toulon in France. The American Public Transportation Association publishes detailed figures for the amount of government funding that America's transit systems receive, but I have been unable to find similar figures for French systems. Can anybody point me in the direction of a reliable source for such figures, preferably in English, though I can use Babelfish to translate if it is in French?

  1. French public transportation is funded according to a very simple formula.

Cost of Operation - Intake (ticket sales, ad sales, and whatever else they sell) = Funding amount.

Europeans in general find it a good investment to fund their public transportation to whatever level needed to keep it going and serve as many places as possible.

Having lived in France for a while I know that very few places cannot be reached by some form of public transportation.

To get more details will be a little complicated without speaking french because you would need to check web sites of all the different parties involved. National, regional, departemental and local governments are all involved to some degree in the funding as well as some private and semi-private companies.

  2. I am a Belgian citizen and I have lived a long time near Toulon and I am afraid walyank is right. Knowing what is the part of the state contribution means knowing which part is going under the table to corrupt political parties and politicians.

  3. I found this site, and hopefully it will help...it has contact information, so maybe you can call in and ask the French Bus Transportation company how much funding Toulous gets?:
