How much tax and NI should I pay on £8 an hour without an NI number?

I just started a new job two weeks ago, they said I would earn £8 an hour. But only £5.50 is left after tax/ni deductions.. does that mean I'm paying 45% for tax and NI?! Seems like a bit too much to me!

Will these duductions go down as soon as I have an NI number?

  1. Yes , the deductions will go down, seems that you are paying emergancy tax, when your employer gets your tax code you should get a rebate in your wages

  2. The NI rate won't change. You pay no NI for the first £105 a week you earn, then 11% after that.

Did you give a P45 to your new employer though, or ask to fill in a P46? If you didn't do either of those, you will be taxed at the basic rate until the Tax Office sends your payroll department a notice of coding for you.

Have you had a payslip yet, and does it say BR in the tax code? If so, then all your earnings will be taxed at the basic rate of 20%.

  3. HELLO

YOU STARTED A NEW JOB, HAVE THEY GOT PROOF OF YOUR NI NUMBER YET? NO

THEY PUT YOU ON EMERGENCY TAX AS THIS IS THE MOST YOU COULD HAVE TO PAY.

WHEN THEY GET PROOF OF YOUR NI NUMBER IT WILL BE SORTED AND OVER PAYMENT REFUNDED.

IF YOU WORKED SOMEWHERE AND CLAIMED A REAL LOW TAX CODE FOR A FAMILY MAN WITH 3 KIDS AND THEY USED THAT TO SORT YOUR PAY THEN YOU DISAPPEARED HOW WOULD THEY GET THERE MONEY BACK
