I was just wondering cos I was drinking with the owner of the pub I was in last night I had to pay £2.60 a pint but he only had to pay £1.40 a pint so is that just the tax he was paying?

Also if you know could you tell me how much tax (£'s not %) there is on 20 cigarettes roughly.

I was at an all night store in London and had to pay £6.09 for 20 Lambert & Butler, pricey I know, but how much would they have been if there were no tax on them?

  1. The duty on beer is worked out on the % of alcohol in the beer, so varies from beer to beer. It was around 35p on average last time I checked, but goes up by about 4% (inflation) every year.

Duty on cigarettes is 22% of the retail price (+ 9.68 pence per cigarette) so a total of £2.93 for a packet of 20 cigarettes at an average retail price of £4.25 per pack, which means that the duty is 69% of the price.

  2. tax on a pint at £2.50 is about 70p the rest is to pay rent, bills, wages etc, everyone has a right to make some money.

  3. The owner has to pay same tax as you do. The difference in the price is caused because the owner pays everything in his providers market prices. When you byu a lot of the same staff from a provider you get a lower price but you sell them the regular price. As for the cigarettes I can't really help you, here in Greece the tax for liquor and cigarettes is 19% of the price.
