  1. Luke,

It is all based on your home of record.  If Missouri is your home of record, you have some work to do!  You can file paperwork with the state saying that you are active duty military stationed out of state and you want no tax withheld.  You will need to include copies of your orders with this.  If that doesn't work (and sometimes it doesn't), set your withholding to the highest allowable.  Missouri does not tax their own miitary folks if you are out of state, but it's just a pain in the f***y to get it setup! :)

If you are stationed in Missouri and your home of record is elsewhere, then it is your home of record that will withhold taxes.

Edit:  Good news!! They actually have it set up online now!!

    From the website:

My home of record is Missouri and I am stationed at a military base in Alabama all year. My income is entirely from the military. Is my military pay taxable to Missouri?

No. You need to complete the No Return Required - Military online form indicating you are not required to file a Missouri return.

My home of record is Missouri and I entered the military from Missouri on April 1st. I was stationed at a military base in Georgia through the end of the year. Is my military income taxable to Missouri?

Yes, your military pay is taxable to Missouri since you were in Missouri more than 30 days.

  2. All good answers so far.  :)

Keep in mind that depending on what 'rate' you go for and what types of ships, you might be tax-free during most of your career.

I was tax-free for about 18 years of my 20 year career.

  3. You must not forgot that Social Security, Medicaid, retirement, federal tax is taken out too
