  1. If your are caring for children in your home, then the $225/week is self-employment income.

For the year, let's say you gross/net $10,000 for the year.  You would owe roughly $1,400 in self-employment tax.  Your AGI would be $9,300.  With even 1 dependent, you wouldn't owe any income tax.

You may be eligible for EIC.  If this is your only income and you have 1 or 2 qualifying children, you would probably get enough EIC to cover the SE tax.  However, the IRS would probably delay sending you the EIC until you proved you actually had the income.

Have the people who pay you do so by check and photocopy the checks before you cash them.

If you are caring for children in someone else's home, you are not eligible to be called self-employed.  The employer should be providing you a W-2 and doing the FICA/MC withholding for you.

  2. Impossible to tell without knowing total income.

But if it is 225 earned as sch-C (business), at least $34 for FICA tax, and who knows for income tax (depends on total income). Depending on the age of the children, you might be eligible (again, depending on income) for up to 1000 child tax credit/additional child tax credit/ and/or earned income credit, which might offset the $34.

Or, if your income is, say, about about $30,000 approx., you might owe a bit on income tax, also.

    So, $34, more or less.
