I disagree with the other answerer.  A green card holder in the U.S. may be out of the country for up to one year at a time.  If you are going to be gone more than one year, you will need a re-entry permit.  if you are goneore thn 2 years, you can lose your green card.  See sites below to read these facts...read section on international travel.

Sorry Charlie.... though it's written on the State's website like those you've quoted, but the truth is immigration officers will give you hard time if you left US longer than 6 months at a time, and we have a few clients whose greencards were revoked after spending 6 months in US and 6 months in the Phillipines for 2 years.

  3. If he's outside the USA for 8 to 9 months per year his green card will be void the second time he does it.  You are expected to live over 50% of the time in the United States.  That's the whole point of being a permanent resident.
