I travel a lot for work, but would like to start composting. I'm typically gone 4 or 5 days a week. Can I still compost successfully?

  1. Yes you can.  Once a week maintenance will probably be fine.  Once enough material has been collected to start "cooking", you should turn the pile every week or so.....stress "so".... to mix everything around, get more oxygen into the pile and to moisten if necessary.  Under normal household situations, compost may take up to 9-12 months to form which is why two or more bins are recommended.

  2. Composting takes very little work, but it takes a lot of patience. I dump stuff on my compost heap once a week or so, especially in the fall when there are lots if leaves around. I empty the heap once a year -- that takes a few hours of hard work. Your travel schedule should not interfere with a successful compost heap. Good luck.

  3. Composting is just leaving organic waste in a pile and waiting, it's even easier than taking out the trash. You might not add much if you're only throwing stuff on the heap three days out of the week, but the organisms that break it all down won't care.

  4. All you will ever need to know about composting.
