How much time do police have before they have to charge you?

i was stopped last night and the police found marijuana in the car but in the end let me go. i got a call tonight and they said they are coming to my house to give me a ticket for it because his boss (im guessing the police sargeant) said he cant let me off the hook.

can they do this even 24hrs after the traffic stop happened?

  3. They can file the case up to two years from the date of offense.

    You should have gone to jail and had your car towed, so quit whining and accept responsibility for your own actions.

  5. You can be charged any time up until the statute of limitations expires. That is determined by state law and the severity of the offiense, but  I'm not aware of any states where it is less than one year.

  6. I believe the statute of limitations in this case would be 7 years.  Possession of marijuana is in most cases a misdemeanor, and not a civil infraction (it all depends on your state) unlike a speeding ticket this is a criminal offense and you can be charged for it even years after the offense was committed.
