Question:

How much time do you need between stopovers?

My husband and I are planning a trip to LasVegas. We live in canada, so this would be considered a internation flight. We found a good deal with one catch. There is a stopover in Phonix with only 45 minutes in between flights. This has me a bit concerned. We are purchasing travel insurance. How much time is advisable? If we missed the flight due to the first one being late, would the travel insurance pay for this incident.

  1. Let me clarify the previous posters.  Yes, the airline will re-book you, but that doesn't mean there will be space to do so.  Also, if the delay is weather related, they are not obligated to provide anything other than a later flight.

You are doing the smart thing by buying trip insurance, in the event of a delay, the policy will REIMBURSE you for hotel expenses, etc.   Read the details of your policy though, some have exclusions.

45 minutes is cutting it close, and here's why.  Depending on where you leave from in Canada, you may not be able to pre-clear US customs.  If you cannot, you will have to claim your bags in PHX, then clear customs, then re-check.  THAT will not happen in 45 mins.  Check your departure airport to see if they have pre-clearance capability.  If not, consider another flight.

  2. 45 minutes is enough time (usually).

You don't really have to worry about it though,

you would be rebooked onto a later flight at

no charge if you miss the connection because

    the first flight is late.

If it is on the same airline, unless the first fight

is VERY late, they probably coordinate the flights

and hold the outbound flights, because there are

other people on your flight making connections too.

  3. I would think it would be the airlines problem if you missed the connecting flight due to their fault. So they should organize something for you if this happened.(Airlines have been known to put  people up in a motel   for certain reasons so I dont see why they couldn't do something for you.) Although   I cant say for sure so its better to  check with your airline to ask them any question you may have. Have a nice holiday.
