  1. if you do it your self (10 to 15mins  if you know what you are doing ) and you stuff something up you end up with a dead computer , or you can pay some extra and get it done by a shop who have to give you some sort of garentee and do it right the first time

  2. Ram upgrades are usually very straight forward and some people even choose to do them themselves. However the time varies from each different computer but it should be like an overnight job at a store most likely.

  3. If you are in any way mechanically inclined, you could just find a website that will give you step by step directions do to it yourself.  I upgraded the RAM in my laptop and it only took me about ten minutes, if that.

  4. Laptop memory upgrades are usually straight forward IF you can follow directions, depending on your model, you MAY be able to do it yourself in less than 10 minutes. Here's something to consider, if you have 1gb installed, its probably in 2 slots, 512mb ea... to upgrade to 4gb means pulling out both sticks and install (2) 2gb sticks, then you'll have 2 sticks of 512mb that are useless(unless you can sell them on ebay for cheap because noone really wants 512mb sticks these days. If you choose to pay for the upgrade, try and find a shop that can do it while you wait, like I said, most laptops(with the memory compartment on the bottom of the laptop) should take 10 minutes or less. You'll have to pay the cost of memory and a labor charge averaging $75.00 an hour. Even if it takes 10 minutes, you'll still have to pay for the whole hour in most shops. IF the laptop has to be "opened" for memory installation, then you're looking at several hours and a sizable labor charge, be sure and get a estimate first. Take a look at the link below, and then you decide, Good luck!

  5. First you need to buy the RAM, the best I can suggest is http://www.newegg.com, find the RAM corresponding with your laptop and then the installation will take about 2 min literally, you just plug in and turn computer on. It will auto update its self.

  6. The RAM itself should cost no more than about $200, and probably less than $100 if you're willing to go with the cheap stuff.  You need to find out what speeds of memory your laptop's board can handle.

Once you get the RAM, it will take you five minutes to put it in.  On most laptops, there's a panel on the underside that gives you access to the memory chips.  You pop the old ones out and put the new ones in.  You can probably do it yourself.  If you're uncomfortable doing that, don't pay anyone more than $20 to do it for you.

  7. FYI, unless you're running Vista 64, you won't be able to use 4gb RAM.  It will only recognize about 3070MB.  Any overflow, if you're using Vista will be given over to your graphics controller.  If you're not using Vista, it'll just disappear.

It's easy enough of a fix, you can do it yourself.  Buy your RAM from Newegg.  They have a RAM selection program that makes it really easy for you and the price can't be beat.  I'll link you to instructions and newegg in the sources.
