  1. There are two factors you must consider.  One factor is wind speed and direction.  The old tall ships with square sails did not sail to weather very well.  A modern sailboat with modern sails can sail roughly 45 degrees to the angle of the wind.  The other factor is "Hull Speed".  The displacement hull formula for hull speed is: the square root of water line length times 1.34 = speed in knots.  The hull speed is not the absolute speed, but the general accepted formula.  The shape and design of the hull will have an effect on hull speed.

  2. Schedules arrived with advent of steam, not wind, and man

has yet to fully harness weather to blue water helm control.

  3. this is like saying how long to drive across the country.Boston to LA? Miami to Seattle? Atlantic crossings are 3,000 miles from Miami to England, 2500 from Boston to England....

and as was said, max speed for the boat is square root of the waterline times 1.2 or 1.3.....so something like the USCG Eagle could do 12 or 14 mph in ideal conditions.......with the wind behind......and as little as 5 with the wind from ahead....so anywhere from 10 days to 3 weeks is your answer
