You're going on a trip of 55 miles. The Safe speed limit set by public authorities is 55 miles per hour. There are no stops or slowdowns the whole way.

How long will it take you to get there?

55 miles; 55 miles per hour; one hour. Right?

Now, you're in a hurry. You want to get there faster. You're willing to risk your driving privileges, your life and limb, everybody else's life and limb who has to interact with you as they walk or drive around the highway. They can misjudge how fast you're going because they're used to judging their interactions based on drivers obeying the Safe speed limit.

So, instead of the Safe limit of 55, you go 60 miles per hour, for 55 miles, no stops or slowdowns.

Now how long does it take you to get there? How much less than the full hour?

55 miles; 60 miles per hour.

For that period of time you risk losing your driving privileges, paying fines, losing your life and limb, others' lives, and you save how much time?

Do the math. It's good for you.

  1. No matter what it is, it's not worth the trouble.

  2. 1.09 mins

  3. ok. i would save 5 minutes.

Also I'd like to point at that if you crash at 60 mph as opposed to 55 mph, you are likely to do the same amount of damage to yourself and your vehicle.

Also If saved 5 minutes a day, each way on my commute, that's a total of 10 minutes a day or 50 minutes a week.

    50 minutes a week multiplied by 52 weeks = 2600 mins or 43.33 hours a year.

    If I work for 30 years, 30 years times 43.33 hours a year= 1299.9 hours or 54.1625 days

So you go 55 mph and waste 54 days on the highway and I'll go 60 and have that extra time for fun stuff.

One last note, In most states going 5 mph over the speed limit will not get you pulled over. And even if they did, its a violation akin to a moving violation so you'd hardly risk losing your license.

Now you do the math smart guy!!

  4. only a couple of minutes, but really only a real ****** of a cop is gonna nail you for doing 60 in a 55 zone and you can lose your life going a lot slower too.

  5. Mathematically it is five minutes.

In practice, it is less than that, because there will be times when you will need to ease off the speed (for example, for a bend), which may not be needed at the lower speed.

In practical terms, I would be surprised if you saved as much as three minutes
