  1. In europe at a lot of the places the tip is included but it's nice to leave an additional 10%.

  2. 10%.

  3. 20% at a minimum and up to 40%....after traveling abroad I have found that most people out of the US tip extremely well..family I have abroad leave a minimum of 25% even for poor service.....I do not understand why you think they were unhappy...find that strange...one other note, servers in other countries are not as overbeing and obnoxiously friendly as US......they do their job, do it well and expect tip....in US they try to banter and yap at you, and then dont do job well and expect large tip.......Leave what you feel is appropriate and be on with it.

  4. I can't speak for tipping worldwide, but I have traveled extensively in Europe and Central and South America.  In most places outside the US waiters are paid a true wage, and tipping is truly a bonus (unlike in the US, where tips are the largest part of a waiter's income). In most of Europe 10% is excellent at nicer restaurants, where 1 euro or less is fine at the local cafe or bar.

In Central and South America, it is difficult to say what is reasonable. Most places Americans go are used to receiving tips from rich Americans, so a 20% tip might be frowned upon, although it is still a huge amount compared to what a local might pay. In that kind of situation, just tip what you feel is reasonable. If you're going to resort destinations and are dressed like a rich traveler, you'll be expected to tip in kind. The best advice really is to ask a local (or even better an ex-pat) what is reasonable and don't be worry about it if someone appears to be unhappy with what you leave. Another option is to look it up for the particular locale you are visiting before you leave (for example: "tipping in Egypt" will return plenty of results in a search engine).

I would never tip more than 25% on a significant bill unless that was customary and expected (and the service were priced lower to reflect that expectation).

  5. I leave nothing: as service* is always included in the bill,  dont feel obliged to leave a tip. I sometimes give a gift instead of money.

    * Hotels in Particular with a restaurant

  6. In the UK, it is 10%
