Question:

How much to DIY a bathtub and shower?

We have a half bath that has plenty of room to add a bathtub/shower stall. It's by the back door of the house, so I'm happy to go with an economy model. Can anyone guess how much this will cost me to install? We would do as much of the work ourselves as possible as my husband is handy with plumbing.

We live in Virginia. Thanks so much!!

  1. It's certainly much cheaper than paying installers by the hour! It's just going to cost you a LOT of time.

  2. is there a window where the shower is going, if so would not recommend installing a shower with a window in it

I would install a acrylic tub about $200.00 (a metal tub is cheaper but a lot colder, marks and dents) and a tub surround about $150.00 a 3 or 5 piece is alot easier to install than a one piece( a surround that goes almost to the ceiling is a much better choice than a 60" one)

You should have moisture board where the shower is going about $12.00 a sheet the moisture board does not have to be completly finished just bonded

a set of pressure balanced taps would not be a bad idea either, about $120.00

  3. I live in a rented apartment but just before I moved in they had the bathroom redone.. they didn't remove the tub, they just sprayed it with a new layer of that powdercoat stuff and added a new surround over the old one.. from what I know it was about $600 to do it that way..
