When I get older I want to adopt a child, but I don't want a baby...I want a child anywhere from four or 5 years and up. Is this less expensive than adopting a baby or toddler? About how much would it be to do this is Pennsylvania? How long would the process take?

  1. Call the Department of Social Services in your city they have many children that need a lovinghome and are in danger of aging out of the system oh yea to answer your question if u go through places like that a lot of times u get paid for adopting

  2. It is much less expensive to adopt an older child, but if you have attentive social workers, they also work harder to see if this is a good match.  My relative adopted a 7 year old (she is now 8) who had been passed over due to her medical problem.  They only had to pay some of the court costs, that's it.  There are different problems associated with adopting older children - they don't come as a blank slate.  There is usually some a-parent training involved for good reason.

  3. I think it is a good plan! I would be prepared to take on many challenges and research some of the possible issues and situations you may have to deal with first while you are still young. I have done what is called fos-adopt. You can foster to adopt in any state, I believe. Contact  your state adoption or Dept. of Children and Family Services for information. If you foster, you will not pay to adopt... this is sometimes the quickest, easiest, most cost effective way to adopt a child who is older. AND... it takes the children from your own area who have parents incapable of caring for them for various reasons.... some not so good. But if your goal is to help these children, then I would look into this. We fostered our boys for almost a year before beginning adoption proceedings and then it was only about 6 months from there. Our daughter was quicker - already been in the system for a bit - we fostered her for a month before beginning adoption proceedings. Hope this helps!!!

  5. I adopted my son when he was 2 1/2 years old.  I paid the clerk of the court $35 to file the paperwork.  I did it all myself with the Florida DCF's help.  the actual adoption should cost the same.  it's the stuff you need to buy for the child that would change the costs.  like do you need a regular bed or a crib?  high chair? car seat?  it was 6 months from starting the adoption process to bringing my son home.  I got his half sister in 2 months, with the same expenses.

  6. Older children are usually adopted through foster care and considered special needs (even if the children don't really have any specific special needs).  In most states, almost everything is paid for by the states....so yes it is cheaper.

The process of being approved can take 6-8 weeks (depending on if you are cooperative and have all of your stuff together)...

The process of finalizing an adoption can take 3 months to a year or more....

The thing that takes the longest is finding a match and getting a placement...that is anyone's guess.  The younger the children the longer it takes.
