It depends on where you do your training. if you go part 141 (usually a college program) you have to factor the cost of the the flight program along with the tuition of the university. Ex. Western Michigan University has an out of state tuition that comes to roughly 20K USD annually. Then you have to factor in the additional cost of the actually flight courses.

If you do part 61 - you pay as you go and that depends on what flight school you go to Here in Chicago I looked at midway and starting the private was 200.00 an hour plane and instructor as opposed to Lansing airport (just south of chicago) where plane and pilot was only running 120.00 an hour.  It also depends on your goals as a pilot. If you only want to be a private pilot you can do that for roughly 3500.00 USD but if your trying to pursue a career as a commercial pilot your looking at 35,000 give or take. It depends on the country you are in and the no. of authorized institutions in the country to train for pilots.

In India, the cost of training comes between 10-15 lakh rupees. It includes 100-250 hours of flight in single engine or double engine aircraft. Once you complete the training , 1000 hours of flight can be completed on job. Initially air carrier companies take people at 10 lakh to 20 lakh rupees per year on a contract of 1-3 years. After that, as you get more and more experienced you get more and more money.
