Ok, I am not a novice but I am also not a full-time professional either. I have a client that is moving to a new business location and needs a guy(me) to do the move for him. He will be transferring four computers, 2 printers (1 network printer) and various other equipment to a new location. He also would like me to do a scheduled back up of a shared drive on one of the computers too. He also wants me to do a lot of other various assignments including imaging his computers and backing up all of his important files that are on all of his computers. It is a pretty easy set up but I have only done work for home users and never a business. My questions is should I charge this customer hourly and how much an hour or should I have a flat rate? I live in the Atlanta area and I only have an A+. Like I said earlier, I have done numerous jobs for home users but never a business. Thanks for your opinions!! :-)

  1. Never give a fixed price where there is a "variable" scope. You have no idea what you will run into as you move stuff, try to route cable, chase down an extra UPS, purchase an extension cord, find out that the circuits are too small ("I was sure that there was more than one circuit in this room") and do one or two "extra chores"

Give him a fair hourly rate at stick to it.

He'll want a fixed price and so then he can work you for 2 days extra for free ("But you said you would take care of me!!")
