How much $ to contribute to classroom in elementary school?

In the welcome letter that my kids' teachers send home, they list the supplies needed, supplies on the wishlist, and also a request:

"If you are able to make a financial contribution,it would be really helpful. these funds would be used for art supplies, classroom library books, science activities and other classroom projects".

We live in an area with very high performing schools and mostly very affluent parents. Like, houses still sell with multiple offers within a month, to give an idea.

The school and classrooms have enough volunteers, and teachers are looking for polite way to turn away parents! So helping by volunteering is not as much needed in our school. I have no idea how much other parents contribute, no one talks about it.

I am lucky to be able to make a sizeable donation to the classroom budget. In the past, I've sent in $25 and sometimes $50. I am wondering if donating $100 would be OK and welcome, or would it seem like I'm trying to get in the teacher's good books?

  1. If you are able, I think $100 or any amount would be much appreciated by the teacher. At our school, we have something called "adopt a classroom" where you can donate any amount to a specific teacher and the funds must be used directly in the classroom. Many people don't realize this but sometimes schools barely get enough funds from the government to provide textbooks, and basic things like paper! Most teachers spend $100's of dollars of their own money each year on the basic necessities. I used to be a teacher and the budget I was given for the whole year barely even covered making copies for the children! I don't think you should worry about what others may think about your donation. But I would definitely keep it private- I think it would be tacky if people talked about how much "so and so" donated, or who couldn't donate, etc... Its not about who or how much. Its about everyone pulling together to try and make your school the best it can be!

  2. If the amount is bothering you, why not just purchase some of the supplies on the list instead?
