Question:

How much to fence in a pasture and what materials should I use?

I have the option of moving my horse right across the road, but I need to fence in the pasture. There are some posts, but many are rotted, so would need to be replaced. The area is about 15 acres, but I could make it smaller if needed. I am thinking electric wire, and my gelding is great with fences. I need ideas on what kind of posts, what kind of wire, and price estimates. I need to know approximately how much per acre to decide how many acres I can fence in for now.

Thanks for any info!!

  1. Go to TSC or some other farm store for supplies.  Electric works for horses but you have to get the white tape kind so they can see it.  Probably two or three rows is high enough.

  2. I would call your local feed store, hardware store - Home Depot, those types of places. They have wire and posts. You can get a price from them. I'm sure prices very from area to area.

Remember, hot wires are not something that will keep your horse in if something spooks him in the middle of the night. It's very easy for them to go right through it. I have a fear of a horse getting out and hit by a vehical, so good strong solid fencing is very important. You might look into barb-less wire.

You might want to look into hiring someone to put the fence up for you.

I kinda thought it cost quite a bit to have some one else do it, but if they know what there doing they can put it up pretty quick.

    Thats just a thought.

Sorry for the miss-spelled words - spell check is out AGAIN!

  3. You should check in horse magazines. They usually have fences that you can by.

Or you can ask local barns how much their fencing cost.

You can also go to the nearest saddlery store and see if they can help you find cheap fences.
