How much might it cost me to get both my love seat and couch reupholstered?

[They're worth a lot because of their quality and wood usage--circa late 80's]

  1. It really depends a lot on the amount of detail (wood trim, tufting, buttons, etc.), whether or not it needs to have anything more than recovered (new padding, retying springs, joint repairs, re-webbing), and your choice of fabric that can vary from $30 to $100+ per yard.  With minimal pattern repeat, you need about 17 yards of fabric, more for pattern match and more for detachable cushions.  You may also need new foam cushions, and beef up in padding.  In most places you are probably looking at $600-800 each, labor only, plus materials, pick up and delivery, and additional work.

If the piece has good "bones" it will be worthwhile, but you are about in the area, price-wise, of a third or fourth quartile cost for a new one.  I work on a lot of furniture and some of the newer stuff is stapled together particle board and plywood with rubbberized webbing.  If your piece has a hardwood frame with doweled or mortised joints and circular springs, it is better quality that most of what you are going to find now.

  2. Unless they're of extreme high quality, it'll cost more to reupholster than it will to replace them.
